He was a large land owner in Monongalia and Marion Counties. He was probably the founder of West Warren as he sold many of the lots from the land he owned there. This village became Wadestown, West Virginia. Some of his land was in the heart of the famous Scott's Run coal field. He evidently sold his three tracts of land on Paw Paw Creek in Marion County May 5, 1858 after he had moved to Iowa. A History of Monongalia County states that son Alexander was born on Scott's Run, while George Irvin and Govey were born in Indiana. It's not clear when he moved or when he came back to Virginia. He made a number of deeds in 1840. But did not buy the tract in Marion County till 1848. He probably lived in West Warren for many years as three of his sons, Alexander, Waitman and George married daughters of men who lived in that region. He was a physician as well as a farmer. He passed away after visiting relatives in Indiana, and his sons in Appanoose County, Iowa, and was visiting his grandson Alfred Conner in Chariton, Iowa, when he complained of not feeling well. He is buried in the cemetery at Chariton. (Goshen Cemetery, Lucas Co.)
